Determining The Path Of Amphan And Assessing Damage Using Real-Time Imagery To Boost Rescue Efforts – Traced Using EOfactory

May 28, 2020 Artificial Intelligence Machine Learning Satellite Technology

Amphan made the landfall on Wednesday, 20th of May creating havoc in the North-Eastern parts of India. Millions of people were left without power and the land was flooded with water. With no access to affected areas, it is impossible for any agency to assess the damage and send rescue efforts. SkyMap Global recently launched EOfactory (https://eofactory.ai). We used this platform to study the pre and post Amphan Cyclone.

Initially, our team of remote sensing experts wanted to use the Sentinel-2 Optical images for the analysis but the cloud cover during the cyclone masked the entire area. Fortunately, EOFactory supports SAR imagery for analysis, hence, we decided to use Sentinel-1 satellite images for the study.

Selected AOI is about 5,500 Sq Km covering Halda to Kolkata (Path of Amphan)
Cloud-covered optical image makes it impossible to conduct an analysis
Downloaded SAR data for 16/05/2020 (pre-amphan)- Shows very minimum water areas which can be salt ponds or any other water storage
SAR data for 22/205/2020 (Post Amphan)- More than 30% of the area is flooded
Pre (Left) and Post (Right) view of the AOI

The biggest challenge for govt will be to assess the damage as quickly as possible substantiated with ground reality. EOFactory can derive the actual submerged areas along with its locations and area. With inbuilt AI Models, with the click of a button, automatically the department can derive results.

Water areas before the disaster
Water areas post the disaster
With each flooded area displayed, it will be easy for rescue teams to prioritize which areas are more badly affected
SAR images data 16/05/2020 and 22/05/2020 with automatically extracted water bodies of post disaster

EOfactory is easy to use the platform and is totally FREE! You just need to create an account and start using our platform for your own analytics!
